Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 ounces (113g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

4. Combine buttermilk and vanilla extract in a separate bowl. Pour into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

5. Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.

6. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and ground cinnamon.

7. Drizzle the melted butter over the base. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the buttered base.

8. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Let cool completely.

9. Beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until creamy.

10. Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the top. Cut into bars and serve.

Notes

Tip: Ensure your butter is cold for the base and softened for the frosting!

Variation: Add chopped nuts for extra crunch.
