This irresistible Campbell’s green bean casserole is a timeless holiday side dish featuring tender green beans in a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with crispy French fried onions.
1. If using fresh green beans, wash, trim the ends, and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Blanch in boiling water for 2 minutes, then drain. If using canned green beans, drain well. If using frozen, thaw and pat dry.
2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Stir in soy sauce. Add the prepared green beans, 2/3 cup of crispy French fried onions, and ground black pepper. Mix until everything is evenly coated.
3. Spray a 9×9 casserole dish with cooking spray. Transfer the green bean mixture to the dish and spread it evenly.
4. Preheat your air fryer or oven to 350°F. Bake for 10 minutes in an air fryer (then stir), or 25 minutes in the oven (then stir).
5. After stirring, sprinkle the remaining crispy French fried onions over the top. Return to the air fryer for 2 more minutes, or the oven for 5 more minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
Use fresh, frozen, or canned green beans based on availability. For best texture, avoid overcooking or using soggy beans. Save most of the French fried onions for the final few minutes to maintain crunch. Assemble ahead of time if desired, and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking. To reheat, cover with foil and bake at 350°F until warmed through.
