A classic, comforting Midwestern-style hotdish that satisfies even the pickiest eaters. This hearty casserole features a savory layer of seasoned ground beef combined with creamy mushroom gravy, topped with a golden, crispy crown of tater tots and perfectly melted cheddar cheese. It is the ideal fuss-free weeknight meal that the whole family will love.
1 pound lean ground beef
1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 (16 ounce) package frozen tater tots
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
Salt to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink.
Drain excess fat from the skillet and season the beef with salt and black pepper to taste.
Stir in the condensed cream of mushroom soup and mix well until combined.
Spread the beef mixture evenly into an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish.
Evenly layer the frozen tater tots on top of the beef mixture.
Sprinkle the shredded Cheddar cheese over the top of the tater tots.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until the tots are crispy and the cheese is bubbly.
For best results, use freshly grated Cheddar cheese as it melts more smoothly. You can add finely chopped onions or garlic to the beef while browning for extra flavor depth.
